I remember The Day After was kind of frightening, about nuclear war and the aftermath.

The Day After was a TV movie that came out around 1980 or so. It was pretty scary. At the ending they did interviews with scientists including Carl Sagan and they all agreed that it could really happen the way the movie depicted.

Silent Hill (both of them - I loved the 2nd one)
The Grudge (the first one was scarier than the rest I think)

I've seen all of these except Silent Hill, and I totally agree! I'm also adding Shutter and Haunting in Connecticut 1 & 2.

Getting chills just thinking about them!

As I've said I don't watch scary movies, the news is quite disturbing enough thank you...But two movies that were the scariest-Jaws when it came out...even fifty years on I STILL don't feel real comfortable with the ocean directly as a result of that movie  Oh and the final five minutes of the original "Carrie", awesome!

The Day After was some show, thats for sure. I think it was in two parts and had no commercials. Ive got it on VHS but havent seen it in years. Maybe Ill watch it tonight.

The Changeling is also one of my favorites. Its one of those that was kind of low-key without all the wild special effects and violence but was very effective for scaring the crap out of you.

I do too. The best horror movies are the ones that just suggest the spooky stuff. The original The Haunting, Hell House, and a little-known one called The Abominable Snowman, a low-budget gem with Peter Cushing that came out about 1957 or 58. It didnt really show anything until the end, but the horror kept building up to a great climax. Its still scary in this day and age. Another good one from that era is I Bury The Living with Richard Boone and Theodore Bikel.

Definitely The Black Swan. I don't tend to watch scary films but I was made to watch it and it still make me cringe when I think about it

I used to have those movies, and a bunch more. But I lost some when I moved, gave a bunch away and I dont have near what I used to have.

One movie I always liked was Phantasm, the first one. The sequels were garbage but the first one was pretty creepy, especially the Tall Man.

I remember that title. I'm not sure if I watched it, was a bit ago. Some good horror in the 80's as well. The problem with today is they rely on so much gore and special effects, that there's not much left for a good story

Thats true. Some of those movies get bogged down in special effects and blood and guts and dont leave much else.

Phantasm came out in the late 70's I think, its been a while since Ive seen it so Im not sure. Its the one about this guy, the Tall Man who runs a mortuary and is some kind of an alien who takes dead people to a different dimension or another planet. It wasnt too clear on that. There was this little ball with blades that would chase people and stick into their heads and suck out their blood. Kind of a gory movie, but scary as all get-out.
