On that note, one of my favorites: "Every woman is supposed to have the same set of motives, or else to be a monster."

The one and only Machiavelli I do believebookmadgirlie wrote:George Eliot!! I recognise the quote from somewhere in the depths of my mind.

Now this is a great quote IMO but a bit obscure, have a go ....
'The dreams of empire lure the hears of kings - and so men die'

It is a good one, I like it very much as well. It sounds like something from the crusades. Is it Saladin?Fran wrote:The one and only Machiavelli I do believebookmadgirlie wrote:George Eliot!! I recognise the quote from somewhere in the depths of my mind.

Nice work Fran. I think that is the first quote that nobody has been able to get(even after googling, in my case). It is indeed a great quote, little bit hard to work into a modern day conversation but I am going to try.Fran wrote:It's on the fly leaf of a book I'm delving into from time to time & it's credited to Corporal G W Driscoll, Burma 1944 ... warned it was obscure but it is a terrific quote nonetheless.

Oliver Goldsmith. But I admit, I had to look that one up.
I've got this one on the dry-erase board in my office:
