Re: Dumb things you did as a child

My family and I lived in a rural area in California. My father was stationed at the Air Force base
nearby. There were only three houses in the whole community, and they were part of three
different farms. We lived in the house that was part of the fruit farm. Across the street was
the turkey farm. Nobody lived there, but caretakers came every morning and did the chores for
2-3 hours, then left. The third farm had a grain silo, but was vacant and stayed that way for the two years we were a part of the community. My brother and I took the big yellow bus to school every morning. The school was on the base and the buildings were part of the training command
which trained B24 pilots to fight in the European Theater in WW2. Sometimes we'd ride in with our
Father, who started an hour earlier than we did. My brother and I were fascinated by the gobblers. So was Mutt, our mutt who was a lot of different varieties and slobbered on everything
he met in lieu of a handshake. Don't ask me why a dog licks his credentials, ask Mutt!!!!! After school everyday, the triumvirate would descend on Turkeywood, hoping they'd learned something
cool since we'd last harassed them. We didn't really harass them, we cajoled them. "None of you guys has any interest in flying? We chucked pebbles at them, warbled at them, squirted them with
the garden hose. Nothing. Eventually, a turkey with a modicum of talent came forward, and
introduced himself. Oliver was skinnier than the others. But he could run in circles. He could
do the turkey trot in a big circle starting at the trough, where he\ would do a brisk about face,
and launch himself willy-nilly toward the only windows in the barn(which were part of the 10x 16
cubicle that served as an office). Gathering steam ,he continued in the arc he had engineered for himself, and missed the windows by a comfortable 20 inches. He then gave into the dervish that possessed him and cruised past the other landmarks( A GREEN Massy-Ferguson Tractor, two beams of dusty daylight that connected the hole in the upper floor with a spot 10' off center, like
a hypotenuse joining adjacent corners of a right triangle. And finally the feed trough from wince he had begun his slouch toward euphoria. We made sure Oliver didn't forget who was in charge and pelted the rickety, wooden planks that served as the wall of the barn with rocks the size of baseballs. We figured the loud THUMPS they made would incentivize his performance. Oliver was the action for about three weeks. Then one day one of the workers who did chores in the morning
came into the barn in the afternoon.looking for a tool he'd left behind. He reported what he saw to our father and he meted out the appropriate punishment. Our father was old school and didmt spare the rod. We weren't malicious kids and never did anything like this again

I grew up in the Philippines and we had a mango tree in our backyard that branches out over our roof. One summer when I was 8, my neighbor and I thought it was a good idea to bring a knife up the mango tree so we can spend an afternoon on my roof and have something to peel the green mangoes. My nanny noticed our biggest knife was missing and knew we were scaling the tree minutes before that. Thankfully, nobody got injured but with her screaming and cussing at us, the entire neighborhood pretty much knew and it didn't feel like a great idea anymore.

Started a fire in a plastic bucket in order to "stay warm" while playing outside. 8)

I was wearing a cute pair of shorts, and I sat down on a fire ant hill for a minute or two. :happy-bouncyredfire:

I got in the dryer to go for a ride. Fortunately my brother was too short to turn it on.

Put caterpillars into a bucket with leaves and forgot to check on them for a few days. They turned into butterflies and died because they could not spread their wings. Oh... and the lack of food. I felt horrible.

When I was about 6 or 7 I was playing gas station and put water in the gas tank of our family car, a 1936 Plymouth. Bad idea, I got it good with a wooden spoon. Another dumb thing I did when about the same age was to tell my dad to go to hell. Out came the wooden spoon again,

You were a wild child, my friend! :snooty:
Speaking of gas tanks, I thought it would be a good idea to put stones from our driveway into this nice hole on the side of the car. Not my best work.

I refused to participate in gym class when I was in first grade. I would just sit on the sidelines. Got in a lot of trouble for it.

I had a dog when I was around six years old. She was only allowed to go in the kitchen and laundry room. I decided to take her upstairs into my carpeted bedroom. She peed everywhere and pooped in my bed. I was in so much trouble!
