Boiled Egg

Post by Maud Fitch »

Certain food is best used at 'room temperature' but if you have to take an egg straight from the refrigerator, add a splash of white vinegar to the water to stop the shell cracking during boiling.

Especially useful during breakfast-time rush!

 I always wondered why some cooks say not to keep eggs in the fridge. Are there any more reasons?

Cold, how did the potatoe pancakes go?

I liked them, but the children didn't really like them much. They are always suspicious about new food.

My little girl said, "I like them!", because she is a polite little girl. Then she added in a whisper, "... a bit...", because she is an honest little girl too.

Aww, that's cute :) It's a pity they didn't like though. Maybe they would like apple pancakes more.

A not so healthy, but extremely easy meal - and sure to please the kiddos!

Macaroni Goulash

1 box of Velveeta (mac and cheese) Shells
You can make your own, but I don't reccomend KD. :o
1/4 - 1lb of hamburger
1 can of corn or 1 cup of froozen corn
1/2-1 cup of salsa

Boil and strain the pasta, brown the hamburger. Add the cheese sauce corn and salsa. Mix and serve!!

It's all approximate. I'm not a big meat eater so I only use a little. But I love salsa so I pour it in ;) yum.

I make something similar, its a bachelor recipe. These arent exact measurements, I just put in what looks right. I dont know what it is called, for want of a better name call it Bachelor Slop.
Hamburger
Tomatoes
Onions
Peppers, whateverkind suits you.
Fry this all together and add these spices.
Oregano
Sage
Salt
Pepper
Worcester or soy sauce
Dill pickle juice
Chili powder
Garlic
Sometimes in place of tomatoes I use catsup and add when the stuff is about two thirds cooked. when it is almost cooked add elbow mac or seashell mac or you can use rice too if you want. It probably sounds horrible but it is pretty good stuff. My kids were nuts about it.

Wow, these both sounds great, esp on a cold day in front of a nice warm fire with friends.

We used to make this kind of stuff when I was traveling a lot, there were four of us we stayed in places where we could do our own cooking to save money. We came up with some interesting things, I remenber one was baloney soup. It was nasty but with a few beers with it, it was edible.

Younger son: "Corn, yeech! Vegetables are poisonous."

Daughter: "Salsa, yeech! It's too spicy."

It used to be worse when the elder son was briefly a vegetarian, and there were dark mutterings that meat is murder.

Margharita pizza is about the only safe food for all children... pity about tyrannical fathers insisting on a balanced diet.

"Sure to please the kiddos!"??? Ha, ha. Come and try to please mine!

@ Molecular - I just browned some hamburger, and boiled and mashed the potatos and added butter and then added milk until it was runny. Then added the hamburger, green beans and corn. I didn't care for it at all. :)

Hot sausage Sandwiches (easy)

1 pound hot sausage
1 loaf of fav bakery bread cut in half length wise
1 500ml jar of salsa
Mozzerella cheese

Preheat oven to 350. Ground and brown sausage add salsa. Shred cheese. Scoop meat onto bottom half of the loaf sprinkle with cheese, place to top on and cook until cheese is melted.

@ Cold - you must be doing somethng wrong ;) Corn is the easiest veggie to sale. For younger kids (not sure how old you're dealing with) cut all veggies so they look like french fries, then bake some french fries or sweet potato fries with the vegies and throw em all together. And my lord put them to work. Let them help and enjoy the veggies of their labors. If they're not old enough to use knives, they can rinse the veggies. they can place them on the baking pan. they can oil the pan, add spices. Engage them. Ask about textures and colors and smells. They can snap veggies in half. And don't forget the fruits. Kids active in their food preparation are much more likely to be good eaters.
