Re: The Rant Thread...
I hate that Laci, happens to me a lot too. Whats worse is when people who are standing right in the middle of the ailse looking at at item see you approaching from the corner of their eye and yet only move aside about a centimetre and you still end up struggling to get past them while they just look at your blankly as if to say "Whats your problem?". Some people are so retarded when it comes to basic manners. Idiotslaci_baby wrote:PEOPLE THAT STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AISLE WHEN THEY'RE SHOPPING!!! They just stand there and talk or play on their phone! Then they stare at you like you're the rude one welcoming yourself into their personal space! PIck a damn side!!! I will ram you with my basket if you don't move! Grr....

2nd - people who have their licenses but yet can't drive worth crap... I get road rage pretty bad, but when you have people that pull out in front of you after sitting there waiting for you to get closer then pull out with like seconds to hit the brakes, or flick you off because you wouldn't turn out in the middle of traffic...
3rd - just stupid people... I mean I have my deeduhdee moments as I call them, but there's a fine line between "oh I had a brain fart" (lol) and someone just being plainly STUPID... and we all know you can't fix stupid as my husband says

So I decided to form my own bookclub with her and myself.I was upfront with the owner of the bookshop with what I was doing and why. Said it was not personal,I loved the girls but I really wanted a book club that was interested in books and my girlfriend could not participate due to being unable to hear.
Unfortunately a few of the girls who are also of like mind to myself found out about my new bookclub and asked to join. They too were sick of the drinking and lack of book content.
The end of the story is.... We were all abused, ranted at, poked fun of....but are very happy with our new bookclub. We no longer feel welcome into her business and so we no longer have a second hand bookshop to enjoy. That's the tragedy of it.

I have heard about so many bookclubs where members don't bother reading the book & the gatherings degenerate into nothing more than wine fueled bitching sessions & within months those really interested in books & reading have drifted elsewhere. Another issue I have with book clubs is the pressure that is put on members to produce exotic eats & many quickly becomes culinary competitions. Even here on the Forums you have to wonder why some members are here at all, many have never even mentioned a book but post constantly on everything under the sun except books or reading. Cast an eye on the Community & Off Topic forum & you will see it is much busier that any of the actual book forums.primrose777 wrote:So, I live in a smallish town with a great little second hand book shop. The owner of that book shop had a book club to which I belonged. I have been very unhappy with the book club as the girls never read the book... so the discussions lasted 5 minutes and then the conversation turned to Men and the drinking began. I was not there for the drinking, I want to talk about books. My girlfriend, who is is deaf but has hearing aids was having trouble following the conversation due to increased alcohol=increased sound levels.

The treatment of you and your friend is really disgusting & I salute you for the action you took.

@MikeStephenKingman wrote:^ @ Fran, in relation to the Off Topic forums being very busy, there is nothing wrong with this as a forum thats 100% dedicated to reading and nothing else is going to be a tad dull and serious for all but the most hardcore book lovers. I personally really like the Off Topic as its a way of relaxing, having a bit of fun and you get to know the members much better than you might while swapping opinions about books. Look at Suzy, she practically lives in Off Topic so this forum has appeal for both the casual user and the book fanatic. I tend to browse the Off Topics here for an update and when I get the reading bug back its good to know there are forums available for such debate. The best of both worlds are here, although I do agree that a real life book club that descends into non-book talk is annoying for the true fans.
I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with the Off Topic I was just remarking that on a site dedicated to books and reading I find it "odd" that so many members spend so much time in the Off Topic and rearely, if ever, post about an actual book.

considering the age range " over there "i don't find it odd at all...
.
check out the over-abundance of " frivolous " posts " in the name of READING and appreciating books...some of those questions would be more suited to the Off Topic section, where things of a less " serious " nature are more appropriate...
recently out of SHEER FRUSTRATION, and simply a " knee-jerk " reaction to a particular post which left me wanting to tear every hair out of my head, i submitted my own DOPEY post: " do you ever read in a hot-tub ? "

if i had my druthers, i'd have a separate book section for 20, 30, or, over i know it's discrimination, but so be it!
A, 13, 14, or 15 yo teenager should have their own section...i bet they'd prefer it too..

Unfortunately there isn't always a correlation between chronological & mental age.
