Thats true, Mike. So many of the posts are repetitive and get boring after a while. You say what you want and thats it. Some of the off-topic and chat threads give a little life to the thing.

[quote="StephenKingman"]Ladies, lighten up a bit. Those last 2 posts seem very snobbish to me...who cares if people here ask a few dumb questions now and then, its an all inclusive forum so you are going to get the entire spectrum of views and opinions. Look around at most forums, they have an off topic section for people who only have the time to dip in and out for a few minutes for a laugh then go again. Its not a reflection on them as people, they just arent in the mood at that particular time to discuss books. Every forum needs an online pub and a rant thread, otherwise its just
plain boring.[/quote

w/all due respet ,you're mixing " apples w/oranges " and have misconstrued the thrust of what was said.......( i didn't appreciate the " ad hominen " characterization of being " snobbish " ) either..........PUH-LEEZE...that kinda stuff never works w/reasonably minded ppl...

there are others to whom i've spoken with offline who share my views..........so before you get your panties out of shape, and talk about " snobbishness " cool your jets so that you don't talk nonsense...

we'll just have to agree to disagree 8)

Suzy, I think its yourself who has misinterpreted my point. If you re-read my post I said that I agree that someone who goes to a book club to discuss books only to spend the time b!tching about others is correct to be annoyed and I also would be frustrated at this and go elsewhere for my needs but in a forum which had an open invitation you are always going to have people who want to post about The Word Game, The Online Pub etc (threads which yourself and Fran are very active), and thats fine because if you dont like that casual side of the forum, you can have a discussion in the other threads which are very rich and active regarding discussion.

You have the best of both worlds on this forum, you cant have a 100% exclusive books-only forum, that would alienate a lot of people, nor can you have it all off topic either. Look at most forums, they have a section for games etc. That was my point. Please dont accuse me of talking nonsense particularly when 50% of your posts are nigh on impossible to understand due to all the amateur dramatics, CAPS LOCK and unnecessary exclamation marks and what have you.

Clearly you misunderstood what was said..............

when did i ever state that i didn't like the " casual side of the off topic" section?????????????????????? ya got it all wrong....

IT'S THE REVERSE!....I feel that the MAIN reading forum should be the place for more seriousness, and the OFF Topic for fun and games.............( trust me if i didn't enjoy it, i wouldn't be here )

got it now????????..scroll back up and re-read what was said by both " snobbish " posters..............

re my writing style, too petty for me to even address  ..............

Well, personally I post both on books topics and off topics and like them both. As much as I love reading or talking about books, I sometimes feel the need for a change and the off topics answer this need. I don't find it "odd" that so many members spend so much time in the Off Topic. To each his own. At least they post.

As for an exclusive book club, as the saying goes, I am not sure I would like to join any club which accepts me as a member...

Wow, that must be the most "active" response I ever got to a post of mine.

Mike...in Fran's defense...I have never seen her post anything that was even the least bit snobbish. I beleve her comment regarding chronological age and psychological age was merely an observation. One can be 14 and read Aristotle or be 65 and enjoy Harry Potter.

As far as the other comment made about an IQ test...it is much like my favorite Auntie used to say "If you have to tell someone you have money, class or taste...You Don't.

And if you have to TELL someone you are a lady...You Aren't.

Cheers.

Oy kidz, can't we all just get along? I'm pleased that I found this forum in general and that there is such a diverse group of readers. I was telling some bookish people on a fitness site the same thing...any genre you can think of, somebody on here reads it too!
I enjoy it too because I wouldn't belong to a typical book club. I'm a fifty plus woman...who reads almost no fiction, I prefer war, history, biography and current affairs, maybe the odd graphic novel...Too old for the twentysomethings and too diverse for the seniors...so glad I'm here instead!!!

Meanwhile a short rant. I was reading a blurb in the new Time about them considering using the electric chair and firing squad as methods of execution again. They think lethal injection isn't humane enough. Not being overly vindictive but in the case of some people on death row...were they terribly concerned about the comfort of their victims when they committed their crimes?

If they committed a crime that involved the suffering of the victim, the suffering of the victims family then the hell with them. In some countries the victim's family get to pick the appropriate method of execution. I think there's something to that. I know a young man who died just because he went to work the wrong day. They caught the guys who did it, now they're just hanging out in prison for a few decades...senseless crime, senseless punishment.

@ Fran, I never meant that you were a snob per se, thats not what I was trying to convey, I just get the feeling that you are somewhat annoyed by the "casual" chat spilling over into the reading forums and thats understandable but there are enough threads on books and reviews (I still browse them believe it or not) to make this forum a fantastic resource for debating your favorite books, and there is room for the casual and hardcore forumite. Point over. :D

Suzy, I find you a bit quick to take offense and you seem able to dish out criticism but not take it all that well, without going off on a little rant. I do find your posting style a bit jarring at times, its hard to know what you are trying to say sometimes. Im not going to fall out with your over it, its just an observation. if you take it on board or not its no skin off my nose.

Girls, if you are heading for tea, would you be kind enough to throw on a coffee for me. Nice video Fran, I think if we dont all rein it in a bit, the forum is more headed in this direction:

^ What exactly is your problem Suzy? You see, Im not like a lot of people on this forum who will just sit back and accept some of your put-downs and laugh along as if its a joke. You picked the wrong person to attack here. Take a look back at your posts and try to see how much utter nonsense you post on a regular basis and see it from my point of view. I dont even mind the fact that you start about 50 stupid threads a day based on whatever random thought that goes through your mind (tv shows, cooking etc). We all need some new blood, its the way you just burst on to the topics as if your opinion is king and everyone else should just accept it. Hell, my previous conversation was with Fran NOT you, but of course you had to top-up your precious post count and leave a little "post and run" bomb. How sad  Ever hear the saying "Quality over Quantity"? Thats you in a nutshell. Perhaps if you thought out your posts and topics a bit more they wouldnt read like a 5 year old in Art Class, with a lot of grammar and style errors that make it a pain to read.

Then there's your content. You start a thread last week on the Top 5 posters going down. Are you that reliant on this place that a Top 5 thread keeps you "current" and feeds your obsession? Rest assured that you are the top poster here the last year, by top I mean you post the most but I would rather read one post from someone who had something relevant to say than hear your opinion on whatever is passing your window. I will leave it there but I suggest you think through your posts and consider who you are speaking to before you hit the "Submit" button.

@Geneen Karstens I completely understand where you're coming from! Typically if there's conversation at the dinner table/couch or even out at a restaurant, I cover my mouth our wait until I'm done eating.

Mmmmm, I too have in the past been quick to be on the defensive, it's only natural. I used to think some of the posts and topics in the "community" section were ridiculous, but then I play along with "count to a million" and "last post wins" so live and let live is what I say! :|
