Personally, I have heard a lot of great advice over the years but one saying will stick with me a long time.
"When you are 20 you worry about what people think of you, When you are 40 you dont care what people think of you and When you are 60, you find out people arent thinking of you at all...".

My grandpa said that to me when i was twelve. Always stuck to heart. And i've learned how very true those words are.

If you change for them, they cant really love you because they're not getting to see who you really are. Always be faithful to who you are and they'll accept who you are and learn to grow with the idea of who you are with you because of the love they have for you. If thats something they cant do and they lose you, that doesnt mean they never loved you. It just means they're too proud to love someone that much and they will regret it later. Even if they never admit it."

attributed to Mark Twain. The advice? Sometimes bad things happen. Don't let them get you down.
