Who have you met?

Post by IanBookMan »

Reading the other posts about about what people you would like to have a drink with or meet (past or present) got me thinking about some people on the list I have met and how my experience was.

People say I would like to have a drink with "so and so" but what about your encounters when you actually did meet/lunch/drinks with someone that might be on someone elses list.

Let's hear about it - I have a couple but I'll add later.

I've met a LOT of authors. Let me think...

Frank McCourt
Michael Palin
Bill Bryson
William McInnes
Nick Earls
Lionel Shriver (weird, freaky woman!)
Jasper Fforde
Nancy Pearl
Norman Sherry (what a funny little man)
Andrew Daddo
Armistead Maupin
Patrick Gale

And I'm off to meet Tim Winton on Tuesday night.

I am sure there are lots more though, I am going blank right now!

I met Maine novelist Carolyn Chute, the author of "The Beans of Egypt, Maine". I was surprised when she arrived at a speech/book signing wearing home-made clothes and looking like she hadn't bathed in a couple weeks. She had a hankerchief on her head with her uncombed hair sticking out everywhere. After the book signing, she saw my Subcommandante Marcos t-shirt and came over to me (Marcos is an indigenous Mexican revolutionary leader of the Zapatista National Liberation Army). She sat down on the floor next to me and we chatted about revolutionary politics for about an hour. She wrote down my address and promised to contact me. I didn't think she actually would, but a few weeks later I received a heavy manilla envelope with a return address that said "The 2nd Maine Militia: No paved road, No Phone, No Fax". Inside was a huge amount of info on a left-wing militia she belongs to, along with a handwritten note inviting me to visit and take part in the militia! Being more comfortable with a pen or a book than with a gun, I didn't respond. Still, I thought it was an interesting experience!

I've also met novelist Richard Russo, poet Galway Kinnell, and literary theorists Fredric Jameson and Paul Gilroy.

I met Dorothy Johnson at a family reunion once, she's a distant cousin. She wrote westerns, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, A Man Called Horse, The Hanging Tree. The only other famous person I have ever met was Clayton Moore, he played The Lone Ranger on tv.

That reminds me of the time my wife and I went to a Hank Thompson concert and he was walking around talking to people in the audience, he stopped at our table, talked for a minute or so then kissed my wife on the cheek. She said she was never going to wash her face again.

I haven't met any famous authors yet, but I have many friends among my local authors who can't still become popular because of different reasons. I do appreciate them a lot. :)
