I have never tried a graphic novel and didn't know what they were until about a year ago. When Alice looked over her sister's shoulder before she went down the rabbit hole, she thought that she couldn't see the use of a book without any pictures or conversations in it. I think these books have rather too many pictures and conversations in them, but I can see the attraction for a generation raised on TV and video games. I still prefer books without quite so many pictures!

There's also manga books. Manga, apart from the covers, is usually published in black and white but introductions to chapters can be in colour. Books are read from top to bottom and then right to left, similar to the layout of a Japanese plain text. To me, the covers are back-to-front! Like anime, the cartoon characters have big eyes with dramatic bodies and there's speech bubbles, exclamations, exaggerations, etc. My local library has shelves of manga paperbacks and they're popular with young adults.
To answer the question, I prefer novels, my interest is absorbed more fully by a book.

I really prefer novels. I've never really read a comic though.

I prefer novels, but I have read some manga. My daughter reads alot of manga cause she has dyslexia so the pictures make it easier for her. I read one of her series one time to see what the big deal was and ended up reading for the next 7 hours. She laughed at me when I got mad cause she didn't have the next book in the series.
