Not The Dark Knight or Dracula.

If it helps, ignore the hint about the walk. It stood out in my mind, but could probably be easily overlooked by others.

Hint: I was originally published as a serial. I was not originally in English.

I feel so bad, but it isn't Cruella nor The Count of Monte Cristo!

A few hints:
This has never been adapted into a Disney cartoon
I have been adapted many, many times, in many different ways

Nope.

Refresher:
  • While I'm often romanticized, I was originally a villain.
  • My home is well known and is very popular with tourists.
  • It's very likely you've heard of me, but it's just as likely that you've heard me.
  • I am a well known character.
  • While I have an actual name, I'm usually referred to by something else.
  • A real event helped to inspire my story.
  • I have a penchant for writing letters.
  • Was originally published as a serial.
  • Was not originally in English.
  • Has never been adapted into a Disney cartoon.
  • Has been adapted many, many times, in many different ways.

    Hint:
Despite how people refer to me, I am not supernatural.

This is probably not the answer, but it does, to the best of my knowledge, satisfy the conditions of all the clues.

Saint Paul

While I'm often romanticized, I was originally a villain.
Paul was a brutal tax collector and persecutor of Christians before he literally "saw the light".

My home is well known and is very popular with tourists.
Paul was a Turkish/Greek but is best known for events associated with his time in the "Holy Land" - both Greece and the Holy Land are well-visited tourist sites today.

It's very likely you've heard of me, but it's just as likely that you've heard me.
His writings are quoted in religious services such as the Roman Catholic ritual of the "Mass" (and possibly other religious denominations). In the Catholic ritual a special section of the service is devoted to his writings and is preached from the pulpit by the priest. It thus would be "heard".

I am a well known character.
He is mentioned in the most famous book ever published - in the "New Testament" section of the Christian Bible.

While I have an actual name, I'm usually referred to by something else.
His real name was Saul of Tarsus, but after his conversion he changed it to Paul and is most often referred to by that name throughout past history up to today.

A real event helped to inspire my story.
It is a "real" story if you accept the Biblical account.

I have a penchant for writing letters.
He is primarily known for his "epistles", or letters.

Was originally published as a serial.
His secret letters to the various hidden enclaves of followers (early Christians) who were being persecuted at that time by the Romans were sent periodically.

Was not originally in English.
The universal language, or "Esparanto", of that period of history was Greek. Jesus would have probably been familiar with the Greek language. It could also have possibly been Latin since Paul sent his letters over a vast area which was controlled by the Roman Empire at that time, thus one language would have sufficed for all, but it certainly would not have been English.

Has never been adapted into a Disney cartoon.
His story has not, as far as I know. I am not aware of ANY religiously inspired cartoons by Disney.

Has been adapted many, many times, in many different ways.
The story of Paul's conversion has been depicted in movies, famous paintings, the aforesaid New Testament, children's Bible story books, Sunday school story telling etc.

Despite how people refer to me, I am not supernatural.
Though referred to as a "Saint" Paul was a real, and not supernatural, entity.

[EDIT] I still cannot reconcile the "walk" clue with this contribution unless it pertains to a "walk of life" or "following". Saint Paul is considered the greatest single force in promoting what became the spiritual "following" of Jesus, or the Christian religion.

That is a very impressive guess, and it absolutely fits everything (which, just... wow). I really wish you were correct!

Thank you for sticking this one out. If at some point you'd like to give up, I would not blame you. Just let me know.

If you're not yet ready to give up, a few more helpful bits:
My visage, if you were to see it, would give me away immediately.
Figuring out the location would likely reveal who I am.

Well, it was worth a shot. I really didn't think it was right, but I was enticed by how well it seemed to fit the clues.

I'm willing to stick it out, but right now I'm out of guesses. I'll work on it!

GREAT RIDDLE !!!!! I'm sure I'm going to kick myself when I find out what the answer is *LOL* :lol2:

@Lunastella

Thanks Luna. I did my bestest, but as Robert Burns once said ...

"The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley."

... and I'm not even a mouse, though my sister has likened me to a "rat" a few times.

I'll offer up a /clarification/ of the walk hint.

It refers to an actual physical way of walking. :tiphat:
