i really had my doubts re whether that pitch of excitement could sustain itself for yet another season, and indeed it did...the 2 hours just flew by...

I only recently discovered Downton Abbey. I watched the first 3 seasons in 2 days and i am completely addicted. I am very pleased with the beginning of season 4. I was concerned after the season 3 finale but they have handled things beautifully.

I love Downton for the sheer escapism, entertainment, the gowns & the houses but above all for Maggie Smith - I just love the woman - she can say so much with an arched eyebrow! The BBC really do this type of period drama so well.
Anyone watching it should be aware that it is a very satinised version of history & probably bears very little relationship to the lives of those who lived and worked at the real Downton ... especially those "down stairs".

Just wondering if anyone's read " Lady Almira and the real Downton Abbey ? " by the Countess of Carnavron ...

I love Downton Abbey! No, I haven't read it yet, but I'm dying to. Season four is finally on PBS in the states and I'm so excited. Episode two though. Just, oh my god. I cried. I still really miss Sybil, she was definitely my favorite. I think I'd have to say that Edith is my favorite now. Being a middle child, I can really relate to her and how she feels so insignificant sometimes. Now, it may be an unpopular opinion, and I'm sorry to offend, but I cannot stand Mary. I think she is rude and snobbish and annoying and half of the time she talks, and I can do is sit there and roll my eyes. I love Michelle Dockery, but I can't stand Mary.

yes, i saw the same show...wonderful!...

my husband was the " real " anglophile, if he was here in view of Pinocchio / vs. the military he'd be outta here...
( he was a highly decorated war-hero )...

he often spoke of retiring in the " Lake District "....

we even LOVED the food there, which most Americans bitch about ..guess cause there was no Mac Donalds there....

Lake District is beautiful! I don't know much about the food, but, yeah, most Americans can't survive without a steady diet of processed meat substitute.

I never said that... ;) Hahaha, that may very well be true. I just really really really want to see that house. It's just gorgeous.
