How Many of Us Work in Libraries?

Post by jhollan2 »

I noticed on many of the other threads that a lot of people here seem to work or volunteer at their local libraries. How many of us are out there? It can be any job: Librarian, Circulation Desk Clerk, Page, Board Member, etc...as long as it's in a library.

I'm a Circulation Desk Clerk.

There's a thread on the Forums entitled "Libraries - Love or Loathe" and it's interesting how public libraries are still highly valued and loved by the reading community world-wide. :D Long may library staff rule!

Yeah, I've been on that one and the "Are you a Library Freak" thread. That's where I noticed how many users mentioned working or volunteering in libraries. I thought it would be cool to get a bit of a head count of just how many of us there are.

that was one of my few " dream jobs " that never did come to fruition...

Not me, even if I tried to. Didn't work out. What's a circulation desk clerk anyway?

A Circulation Desk Clerk is basically what you think of when you think of a librarian. I check books in and out, help patrons find books, place holds for patrons and call them when they come in. I register new patrons and sort out the returns to be shelved and take care of those who come in with fines. The day to day kind of work that comes up. So...basically a librarian. But I don't have a MA in LIS and I don't deal with purchasing and grants. After some googling, it looks like different places have different names for the position.

I worked at a library during college. I also worked in the library at my kids' school for awhile. Now I just have a library in my office. :)

I worked at my university library many years ago when I was a young man, doing my first postgrad degree. It was just a part-time job a couple hours a week, putting books back in the right places on the shelves. The work itself was boring but I just loved the feel of being *in* the library, surrounded by towering shelves full of thousands and thousands of books... There's no place quite like a library, is there?

Working in a library is actually my dream job. I'm hoping that now that I've graduated I will have some free time to start volunteering.

I wish. I have tried, but they won't call me for an interview. Maybe since my degrees aren't in library science. I don't know. I would really love to though.

I do not work at a library. I actually don't work anywhere. I think it would be really cool to work at library though. It would be awesome to be exposed to all those books everday. I like organizimg too, so I would probably really enjoy it.
