ANYONE ELSE PUTTING IN A FALL / WINTER GARDEN?

I'm sick and tired of paying $2-4 bucks for a head of ( not so fresh lettuce )...

My daughter /the gardener tells me that my fave ARUGULA, grows like a weed...

All I need now is a Goat for my fave salad of Goat cheese and Arugula in a creamy Balsamic dressing... 8)

We do a fall/winter garden here as well. We live in Wisconsin, so early frosts are a big challenge. I made a modified version of a cold frame greenhouse, which increased our spinach and kale yields tremendously. These can be built to be sized to any space (ours is 6' x 3' x 4'). I add a mulch layer in mid to late October to trap soil heat, too. We had kale growing as late as Christmas. As we have a ton of south facing windows, I created a set of window mounts so that we could easily mount our planters indoors when the time comes this year to hopefully keep our greens going year round.

Hi Cary!

thanks so much for this valuable info!...wow if you're having such success in Wisconsin, I should be able to follow suit....

my goal too is to have fresh veggies during the winter months........my temps here in W.N.C. ARE NOTHING AS SEVERE AS YOURS IN Wisconsin, so I find your letter very encouraging, and will pass this letter onto my daughter / the gardener who has not had much success w/her Kale and Spinach ( which other than lettuce is my main sphere of interest )

I love your ideas!.....Soooo.... innovative...( I did sumpin similar ) when I schlepped my Gardenia plants from south florida to here in N.C.....we created a " grow-room " to give my precious sweeties a nice warm environment for the winter mos...
Just bought some Tatsoi lettuce seeds, I'd never heard of it till I saw a pic on Amazon...
not only is it a lettuce, but being " oriental " I see it as a great ground cover for my Bonsai Garden...

Send me some Kale!....heeeheee

Probably not this year but once we get into a bigger house with more land, my husband agreed to let me get a green house so I can grow all year round.

That would be great!...my daughter has it on her wish list, so I guess it's kind of pricey...

Mebbee i'll surprise her for her burfday later this month...

It's the least I can do for a " kid " who keeps my Kindle fully loaded, ( I've never had to spend a dime )...

Best gift EVER!...

How are you feeling? and how are your 2 mischief makers doing ?
