it seems as if the news is not covering this earthquake that rocked chili nearly the same way it did Haiti....when haiti got hit, it was all over the news, showing everyone horrible and heart-wrenching details and dramas on the island, and everyone was one hundred percent behind that country, offering support both monetarily and with volunteer support, whereas, even the day it happened, there has been limited coverage on chili.
where are their celebrity auctions, commercials on tv asking for donations...or even news coverage in general?
is anyone else getting this perspective or is it just me?

Here in the UK its Chile is still the top news story on the bbc site. Alot less people have died in Chile than in Haiti despite it being a bigger quake.

It's very different because Haiti never had an earthquake before so their infrastructure was different. Even though Chile's was bigger, they are use to them and so have suffer WAY less damage. You can't compare less then a 1000 lost of lives to over 200,000! Here's your MAJOR difference here!

I understand the differences, but suffering is still suffering yes? regardless of the number of lives lost isnt it our duty to respond to problems such as these with unbiased support?
it just brings to mind the whole tsunami issue that hit the indonesia area compared to the coverage given to burma...i mean burma was wiped off the map but got significantly less coverage then the one in india...
but that was an interesting article that certainly put a better spin on it and i am glad that the bbc is giving it better coverage then ctv, which continues to report on the olympics that are over....

Oh you mean CHILE! hehehe well I can't do anything else but pray for the victims. Besides, it's an act of nature and there's just no way that an earthquake can be stopped.

Yeah, that's just horrible and unbelievable how such tragedies may happen all of a sudden, and even repeat in other places

Can't blame it on God though. He created the planet with lands that tend to move on it's own.

Hey that ain't a problem I just got confused for a second there when I first saw the title but no worries on that!

It might be worth noting that, in spite of the energy release being much larger in the Chile quake, the Haiti one was much more concentrated, basically a spot rupture vs. a 200km long rupture zone in Chile. This is also to be considered when asking why more houses are damaged in Chile, yet the survival chances were so much higher. It is not only social and engineering differences in Haiti vs. Chile, also geology has played a significant role in making Chilenos more lucky than Haitians, so please dont' brush off those differences in the first sentence.
