The French Ambassador, thinking to be highly complimentary, said to Lord Palmerston (the British Prime Minister): "If I were not a Frenchman, I should wish to be an Englishman". Lord Palmerston coolly replied: "Then we have something in common. If I were not an Englishman, I should be wish to be an Englishman."

It is one of those stories so good that it has passed into history. Even if it started as a joke, it just
ought to have happened. Sometimes the witty response is attributed to Lord Addington instead.
