Not sure how this relates to books or what country you live in, but in Australia there is AFTA Australian Federation Of Travel Agents and a travel industry association named Travel Industry Careers. And there is the International Association Of Travel Agents who may be able to offer current advice.

There are also tourism and hospitality courses conducted in most tertiary learning institutions because you can no longer walk in off the street as I did. Friends got their current jobs through budget airlines front desk shift work.

Having worked in the travel industry my personal opinion is that it's not glamorous, it's long hours and you have to put up with every nitpicking traveller on this planet. And, after a time, you get sick of the inside of aircraft. Quite often the exotic destinations make up for it. Happy job hunting!
