Genius is something or someone embodying exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight. There is no scientifically precise definition of genius, and indeed the question of whether the notion itself has any real meaning is a subject of current debate. The term is used in various ways: to refer to a particular aspect of an individual, or the individual in their entirety; to a scholar in many subjects (e.g. Leonardo DaVinci) or a scholar in a single subject (e.g. Albert Einstein or Nikola Tesla). Research into what causes genius and mastery is still in its early stages, but psychology already offers relevant insights.

Genius is a word that is often used, it became almost trivial in nowadays society. For example when people call a kid that writte a book with 7 years old, indeed impressive but it is nothing, or a kid that has only A's in school. In my opinion it is ridiculous the way people make use of this word, people give it away so easily, to be honest I think a true genius is the one that is a Gran-Master in all subjects (or almost all) or in the limited meaning of the word a Genius in a specific area. For me Leonardo Da Vinci was the biggest Genius of all, Einstein and Newton were Genius to but only in their own specific quality so I would call them Brilliant minds instead.

You may be right, I cant put it into terms like you have, but some people can do anything no matter how diverse the subject. My brother-in law can jump into different things not related to each other and become expert at it in a short time. He can discuss anything from nuclear physics to religon to computer science to agriculture. and he is self-taught. He didnt go any farther than high school. That is true genius.

In that case I would call your bother-inlaw a brilliant mind my dear friend due to the fact that the same happened with my dad. The difference is that my dad as only the 6th grade and learned engineering all by himself, he is self-taught, he read loadsssssss of books, so he can talk with you about everything. x)

Two brilliant minds. Da Vinci is a Genius because he was an expert in anatomy, painting, he invented "the flight system" and a system that made possible people to go underwater ( fishing under water suits) and it even had a tube to breath and many other crazy stuff I do not remember and I bet you already knew all this stuff so... thanks for replying.

Sorry, but I can not agree that Da Vinci is nothing as we still use some of his inventions. As for Eistein, is it really important for the science that he did not wear socks?

I was just kidding about Da Vinci, he is a fantastic rolemodel. I was just mainly stating that Albert never wore socks.

I wouldnt have wanted to have been around when Einstein took his shoes off, they probably didnt smell too fresh.

I thought when you take your SOCKS off your feet smell.. not so fresh.

It definitely takes a genius to turn a thread with this title into a discussion about smelly feet ... weird what goes on on this site.

The technical definition of Genius is to possess an iq in the 99.9th percentile, which, on the Stanford-Binet iq scale, is 145. I'm uncertain about edison, but Einstein had an iq of 160, meaning he more than qualifies for the title of genius. Someone like Leonardo Da Vinci is a particular kind of genius, reffered to as a polymath, or a master of many subjects.

I actually have a friend who is considered a mathematical genius, his iq is 150 and he took calculus in the seventh grade.

To my opinion we are all genius and were created with almost similar abilities. But the opportunity to think globally and to be in right place in right time is a privilege.

IMO the evidence would suggest that we are born with varying abilities and varying levels of ability. Then you add to the mix commitment, dedication, determination, opportunity, luck and loads of hard work and that's how you get a 'natural' genius.
