Anyone in or around NYC?

My sis and I are planning a trip to the East Coast at the end of May/early June and we are first headed to NYC for a few days. I visited New York briefly about 5 years ago, but I still need some recommendations if anyone has any.

We're on a budget and hoping to avoid hostels (??), but we want to be able to get to the main tourist sites by foot. So if anyone knows any good & cheap hotels and places to eat, I would greatly appreciate it!

Any other useful tips are welcome!
