Singular vs Plural Question

Post by Andy Clipperton »

My reviewer commented on my first review. Two grammar errors were pointed out. This is the 2nd one and I don’t understand what I did wrong.

What I wrote: I am someone who enjoys reading vivid descriptive passages and this is not one of the author's style points.

Reviewer’s comment: The singular countable noun "style" follows the quantifier "one" which requires a plural noun.

This doesn’t make sense to me. If I understand correctly, I’m being told I should have written “I am someone who enjoys reading vivid descriptive passages and this is not one of the author's styles points.”

Thanks!

Hi Andy, :greetings-waveyellow:

“I am someone who enjoys reading vivid descriptive passages and this is not one of the author's style points.”

I don’t see anything wrong with your sentence as written. “Style” is used as an adjective, not a noun, and the noun “points” is plural, so it correctly follows the quantifier “one.”

I agree that there is nothing grammatically wrong with the sentence as written. I have never heard of the term "style points;" it sounds a bit awkward. Still, the sentence is grammatically correct.
