Friday Grammar Quiz- July 5, 2024

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

The dented, rusted car rumbled through the bumpy, wet street. (Use a comma between two or more adjectives that modify a noun) Necessary punctuation was added.

My team’s jersey is red and white and blue. (If you’re using and, or, or nor to connect the items in the series, don’t use commas) Unnecessary punctuation was taken away.

I wanted to go to bed but needed to do my Friday Grammar Quiz. (If you have a simple sentence with a compound verb, don’t put a comma between the verbs) Unnecessary punctuation was taken away.

It was two hours after my bedtime, and I was working on my grammar quiz. {If you have two independent clauses, and they’re joined by but, or, yet, so, for, and, or not, join them with a comma} Necessary punctuation was added.

“For this quiz,” he said, “you need a grammar book.” (If a quoted sentence is interrupted by words such as he said or she replied, use a comma at the end of the first part of the sentence before the closing quotation mark and another comma after he said before the opening quotation mark of the second part of the sentence.) Necessary punctuation was added.

“Stop doing that!” he cried. (If the words being quoted make up a question or an exclamation, don’t include a comma) Unnecessary punctuation was taken away.

Why, don’t you look dapper tonight! (Commas are used after introductory words such as exclamations. If you have words that begin a sentence and you could understand the sentence without without them, use a comma to separate them from the rest of the sentence.) Necessary punctuation was added.

Janice, help your sister find her dress. (Commas are used after names used in direct address that aren’t necessary for the meaning of a sentence.) Necessary punctuation was added.

To improve your grammar, you need to do the following: buy a good grammar book, practice writing sentences, and read the Friday Grammar Quizzes. (A colon is used to introduce particular information. One of the most common uses of a colon is to indicate that a list will follow.) Necessary punctuation was added. The colon replaced a comma.

There are a number of complaints that I have against the landlord: There is a hole in the kitchen wall, the carpet is stained, and she wants to increase the rent by 10 percent. (A colon is also used to explain or give more information about what has come before it in the sentence.) Necessary punctuation was added. The colon replaced a period.

Hi, Frank. Congratulations. All of your answers are correct. However, some of my answers are different because I stayed within the limits of "Add necessary punctuation, or take away unnecessary punctuation in the following sentences" The idea was not to change the wording of the sentences. If you are interested, take a look at the answers below.
