@Scott, does it mean that because of the subjectivity of what may be viewed as long or short when connecting two independent clauses, a comma is needed but it isn't wrong not to include it? I noticed you only gave an example with and and but. Does this apply to the other conjunctions as well?

A question regarding comma use: I have seen several instances where an author would write something similar to:

He packed a bow, a sling of arrows and a hunting knife.

They put the comma after bow, but not after arrows. Is that correct or incorrect?

Thanks a lot! However, I believe authors are still free to use commas and other punctuation marks wherever they want it to denote a pause... but it's rather complicated to distinguish it out of characters' speech.
