Why do editors make so many mistakes?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Some are indented, some start with a double space and some continue right after the previous sentence. I always mentioned this in my reviews and took off a point in the rating. Well, the last editor giged me for it and took off some points saying that it is not the authors fault and I should not have taken points off the rating of the book. No one has ever mentioned this before. Now I am reading another book with the same problem, but I don't know if I should ignore it or mention it.
When I see this in a book, I just put it down as an error in my list of errors on the PRQ

Yes, I encountered this issue a few times, particularly with EPUB books. It is most likely a formatting problem. I noted the errors as uncounted and mentioned that it is unclear whether they are actual mistakes or related to formatting.

Formatting errors are distracting and are indeed the author’s responsibility, as they pay their editors to make the book polished, I would check on a different device, if possible, to check if it’s your device. If it happens on both devices, I would take subjective points for this.

I agree with you all. This system is extremely frustrating to learn. What works with one editor is wrong with another. This makes it seemingly impossible to learn how to get higher ratings. I do wish there was more continuity between all of the reviewers. I'm still new though, hopefully, with time I can at least get to an acceptable level.

When I first started, I was very confused. Yes, as you said, it would be great if there were more consistency. Anyway, as you keep reading the books and writing your reviews, you will get better and better, for sure. All the best, Erin!

I had my review sent back because of a single comma, I think in cases like this the editor should be allowed to correct the error and go ahead to publish it, instead of sending it back and wasting everyone's time.

That’s ridiculous! That must be a new editor with a feeling of power. There is a huge backlog of reviews to be edited and that just delays everything and wastes everyone’s time. Ugh! That makes me so angry!

Yeah, there’s no reason why your review should be returned for one small error. That was a mistake. An error should cause them to take some points off and then just publish it.

Yes, I don't understand why they sent it back for a missing comma—a very minor mistake. It should have just been published.

It is immensely important that we keep one editor per book. It can certainly create disputes as editors score differently. I, however, appreciate the feedback received on my reviews.

I'm curious, for those that have done editorial reviews, on average, how long does it take you to do one? That could directly relate to the question of why some editorial reviews are of better quality than others.
I am an avid reader. I typically read 1-2 books per week. I enjoy a wide array of genres including Sci Fi, Action/Thriller, and Historical Fiction.

As a geologist and christian, I also particularly enjoy books on science and faith.

Reviews can be sent back to be corrected? How do they let you know you need to do corrections? Do they revise your score after the corrections are done?

Sorry, I just reread your original post. I now realize that you were asking how long it takes an editor to score a review. The link I posted is about how long it takes reviewers to write their reviews.

@Drue Tibbits, yes, you get the opportunity to change your review. It will appear in your Update tab if you can make corrections. And yes, the score is revised after the correction. You can check the status of your review in your History tab. Hope this helps!
