Comma or semicolon?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Comma or semicolon?

Post by Lisa A Rayburn »

Normally, I use semicolons to separate two independent clauses that I want in the same sentence. In the following sentences, I think it would need only a comma because, to me, having the word "If" at the beginning makes the first part into a clause, not a separate sentence. I've been caught on this by the OBC editor before though, and they said it should be a semicolon, not a comma. How am I looking at this incorrectly? The whole problem seems to hinge on whether or not the word "If" make the first part an incomplete sentence. Grammarly seems to think either is correct, so that's no help. So, commas or semicolons in the following sentences? Why?

If you dislike post-apocalyptic scenarios, you have selected the wrong book. If you have an aversion to realistically depicted battles for survival, this book is most assuredly not for you. Most significantly, if you have ever sat alone in the dark and feared the sounds coming from the shadows, put the book down and back away slowly.

I'd use commas as well so I'm curious about the use of semicolons.
Ciao :)

I agree with the others. Your sentences are fine. There are writers who use semicolons somewhat loosely and might put one after "shadows" instead of a comma (because that's a long sentence). And some editors would allow it. But it's NOT required, not at all.

I’m late to this question to respond as I am catching up reading in this forum, but your sentences in question are perfect. I see the semicolon used so many times incorrectly. To throw those into the places you put commas would not be right. What you have written are “if” “then” sentences without the “then”. Those always seem to have a comma. Hope it all has gone in your favor. :)

I would also have used commas in this context. It would be really helpful if someone could explain why semi-colons are more appropriate here.

I always use semicolons when there are two complete sentences with the same subject. Otherwise, I’ll use a comma, when the sentence is combined with a conjunction.
