There is profanity and violent events depicted in the story?

Or There are profanity and violent events depicted in the story?

I feel like are is a bit awkward but I don't know which would be correct. Any suggestions with this type of question would be helpful.

When in doubt - rewrite! That is my new motto.
"Profanity and violent events are depicted in the story."
