Correct use of the verb 'to don'

I believe the meaning of this is 'to put on' as in He donned a silk cloak. or He donned silk.
Once the item of clothing is already on (i.e. being worn), I would say He was clothed in silk.
I have recently been marked down in a review for saying that the following is an error... He was donned in silk. I suggested it would be correct to say He was clothed in silk.
Comments?

In middle school we learned this means to put on or to take on. To don a hat is to put on a hat. To don an appearance is to take on an appearance.

Quite, so I have been incorrectly penalized for counting it as an error when it's used in the context where someone is already wearing the item.

You cannot use what other reviewers say in a forum to determine that. In requesting a recheck, you need to submit information from a reliable website showing that you are correct. If the editor denies the recheck, you can request an admin recheck. What you CANNOT do is complain about the editor here, right @
