Use of Hyphen(-) in grammar

In my previous review, the editor highlighted the erroneous use of the hyphen:

Editor Comments:
1. The ending of the book was mind-blowing(mind blowing)

I was corrected by doing away with the hyphen. My question is where does one apply or avoid the hyphen? :eusa-think:
