Using "a lot" for "many"

What's the verdict nowadays for using the phrase "a lot" to mean "numerous"?
I know that we say it when talking, but in writing it is not supposed to be used ( or the other version "alot")

"A lot" is an empty spot without a building standing etc.

"alot" is not in the dictionary. "Lot" is though. One definition is: "a great many or a great deal." Random House has the example: "a lot of books." It does suggest that this is informal.
