Comma placement

Post by maggi3 »

Hi, everyone. I have two questions. In my most recent review, I wrote the sentence: "Strommen developed anorexia at the age of 12 and later developed illnesses such as OCD and psychosis as well as an autoimmune disorder." I looked up explanations for when to put a comma before "as well as" and found that you are only supposed to put a comma there if the information after "as well as" isn't necessary to the sentence. So, since the autoimmune disorder part is necessary to explain that the author had both physical and mental illnesses, why is a comma necessary in that sentence? My second question is why saying "the patriarchy" versus "patriarchy" is incorrect. I was under the impression that both were correct, as I have seen and heard both used. Any help would be appreciated! :tiphat:

I would have written this sentence as, "Strommen developed anorexia at the age of 12 and later developed illnesses such as OCD, psychosis, and an autoimmune disorder."

The way patriarchy is used will depend on the sentence and the context.

https://www.thepunctuationguide.com/index.html is a good guide for punctuation.
