subject/predicate

Dear all,
Which do you see as the subject in this sentence? I considered it to be THE HEAT, the editor saw the dunes as the subject, and so there was no agreement between the subject and predicate.
The dunes in the heat that makes running feel like flowing...
I feel so stupid!
And I will never learn the English rules for commas, it seems...I lost hundreds of points only for commas!
