Is there a grammer issue here?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. "I was pleasantly surprised when except for a few points where I disagreed with the author, I enjoyed the book."

When I first wrote this sentence, I put a comma after "when" . But then Grammerly as well as some other online grammer checking tools corrected me and suggested I remove the comma. So here I am now. Please settle this.

It may be too late, but I agree with your initial inclination to put a comma after “when.” The phrase “except for a few points where I disagreed with the author” seems to be a nonessential element and would therefore be enclosed in commas. I don’t think the grammar checker recognized the subtlety of the core meaning of your sentence: you were pleasantly surprised that you enjoyed the book.
