Capitalization Question - Cape or cape?

In my recent review, I lost points for not capitalizing the word cape in the phrase "cape of South Africa" which is not a proper noun. I was referring to the lower part of Africa that is a huge cape. There are smaller capes that have names and are proper nouns such as the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Agulhas, but there is nothing named "Cape of South Africa". Can anyone confirm this, please?

I live in New Jersey where the cape is named Cape May, but I would not capitalize the word cape if I referred to it as "the cape of southern New Jersey".

Thank you in advance!
