Semicolon question

I have a question about whether this is an appropriate use of a semicolon:
The murder scandal saw seventeen women arrested for poisoning their husbands; the leaders of the ring were eventually executed for first degree murder.
I appreciate your insight. Thanks!

I am not an expert, but a semi-colon is acceptable, as is a period. I think that a period and a new sentence sounds better to me. However, first degree should be hyphenated.
The murder scandal saw seventeen women arrested for poisoning their husbands. The leaders of the ring were eventually executed for
first-degree murder.

I agree with the other user above that while a semicolon is probably OK, I would prefer a period.
