Periods after a single quoted word ending a sentence

Hello everyone,

This may seem like a silly question but I can't seem to find an answer via the wonderful power of Google.
Occasionally I find myself quoting a word, typically in a situation where it is an untraditional use of the word, and it is the last word of the sentence. So I don't know if the period to end the sentence goes inside or outside my ending quotation mark.

For example, my most recent review was done on a book in which the author tells of his experiences in a spiritual group which he calls the "Circle".

Period inside or outside in that sentence?

My two penn'orth: if the full stop isn't in the quotation, then it goes outside the quotation marks (I think).
So what you have in your opening post is right (I think).

As far as I know, this is one that varies by country. In the US we would put the period inside the quotation. In the UK, it is put outside the quotation.

Today's norm in the U.S. is for all punctuation to go inside the quotation marks.

They go inside, if it is a sentence quotation, I guess, because that is how I do it. However, I am also at a lost if it goes the same if it is like a list of stuffs inside a quotation mark.

It's acceptable to do both, however, whichever you use must be used consistently throughout

From my research, I learned that in the US, all commas and periods go inside the closing quotation marks. The placement of all other punctuation will depend on whether the original material quoted has that punctuation mark, in which case the mark goes inside.

In the UK, only the punctuation in the original material quoted goes inside the closing quotation marks.

I usually use Grammar Girl. I have found her to be reliable.
