Very true Owlie, he was a pit bull. I like that he was willing to bend the rules but tried to never break them. Great character.

It's interesting how different people read the book and were focused on different elements (salacious passages, detective work, etc.).

Very true, those of a sensitive nature to certain things may have put the book down prematurely. It's interesting here to see these stories through everyone's eyes.

I'm about a third of the way through and can hardly put it down. It is a bit of a brain challenge though with all the different characters to keep track of. It's a bit shocking to think that this one guy is aiding and abetting all these murders. This is in my "I thought I had heard it all" category. Gotta get back to the story now.

Enjoy Sahmoun, there are definitely a lot of purple and their dealings to keep up with. :)

There are even more people involved in the true Philadelphia Poison Scandal, which the book is based on. I looked up the factual information about this conspiracy and it boggled my mind.

I think there were at least 60 wives involved.

OK...if there is no purple in the story, then I am not going to re-read it.

I wonder if the Lady in Back plot line is really based on the true story.

This book is changing my perception of the 30's. I admit to a tendency to think that violent crime and evil exists only in my lifetime and that previous generations were much tamer. But this story blows that all to hell. These women are not hardened criminals or mob bosses, they are just ordinary housewives who don't seem to hesitate at all before committing murder and whose only remorse is in getting caught.

That's true sahmoun, we may be experiencing more violence these days, but it has always been around. I think it just feels that much more violent due to the constant negativity of reporting that we see on television and Facebook and everywhere else we turn.

That's exactly how I felt! I always thought women in the 1930's were busy doing laundry, baking casseroles, dusting, going to the beauty salon.
