Beneath Her Shadow: The Washington Monument

Post by larsenreviews »

I wrote this poem about the Washington Monument after a trip to D.C. Feedback welcome!

There she stands, so strong and straight
A welcome to those from every state
A symbol of safety and freedom and life
A place of peace in a world of strife.

In every season she shines so bright
Whether the morning or noon or night.
She and the moon cast a comforting glow
Over the houses and streets below.

Beneath her shadow more than a few
Have remembered the soldiers of World War II.
Friends and neighbors, the young and the old
Have listened to Lincoln's story told.

Under her vigilant watch so tall
Many have wept by the Vietnam Wall.
No building or structure around could dare
To the Washington Monument ever compare.

Her presence is quiet and steady and strong
She inspires the just to fight the wrong.
Over the decades as culture has changed
Her steadfast presence still remains.

Watch for her now, as you enter D.C.
Her regal presence you're sure to see.
For she never stops shining, she never sleeps
And a steady guard she always keeps.
