Omar Khayyam

Post by aero18 »

Anyone looking for some beautiful poetry which may not be immediately familiar to you should try the great iranian poet Omar Khayyam. He's famous for his love of wine (and his irreverance). The translation I read was the one by Edward Fitzgerald and it's stunning. I'm also told that Hafez is incredible but have yet to venture there...

Hope this helps someone discover something new :D

Omar is really popular among all social classes in Iran. I watched part of the documentary film about his memorial site and hundreds of people were coming to respect his memory. Another poet less known in the west is Forough Farrokhzad. Many of her poems are available online. I love her poems even more than Omar's.

I've heard this name before. I rarely hear the word "Beautiful" in reference to any poet that is still living. Clever, witty, ingenious, brilliant, maybe... but not beautiful... I think I'll give it a try.
