A Poem For Niko: The Whispering Room
A boy of 14, so young, so hopeful, so motionless.
His once hazel eyes remained closed to reveal surprisingly long blonde lashes.
His sunkissed bronze skin seemed warm to the touch but his hands and feet cold as ice.
Was this to be the last time I was to hold my friend? My almost brother?
His mother cradled him as best she could around the machine that made his breath bring him life.
My family surrounded his beside looking down at his bare chest, his legs that echoed that he would have been a man soon.
All the knowledge and all the science my father possessed could not save him.
My sweet little Niko.
Why did you do this? Why?
Open your eyes. Look around you. YOU ARE LOVED.
Your family has to walk into the bedroom where you hung yourself and they can never escape it.
That room whispers of what might have been.
You are 15 next month. You are going on your first date. Your first REAL date.
She will kiss you and say how no other boy is quite as silly as you are.
She will hold your hand and tell you what an amazing heart you have.
You are 20 now. Your mother yells at you for your motorcycle racing and applauds your grades in college.
You fall in love with a girl named Mary and experience true love for the first time. You think nothing could ever be better than this feeling.
You are 22, finally graduating from college after many headaches and decide to be a Veterinarian, be the healer that you were meant to be.
But you are 14. Tranquil and silent, unmoving.
I whisper how much I will miss you and that you will always be in our hearts.
The machine thumps and gives me no response.
I will forever despise this room. It tells me what reality is.
Tomorrow when I sit in your room and think of you, your room echoes to me what might have been.
A great many things.
Goodbye, our sweet Niko. Look down and know that we love you always.

His service was today, he was a bright, funny and mischievous 14 yr old boy who loved playing call of duty, teasing his sister, his scooter, and just being a kid. I am not sure why but he hung himself several days ago. Was on life support for days and now his service was today and funeral tomorrow.
Its just tragic.
