I agree! Instrumental music that's fitting with the book. For example, I associate epic medieval stories with some instrumental strings or Celtic music.

Totally!

I just love soundtracking a book, it enhances the experience.

My husband started (and I caught on) reading a book that has a movie already made with its soundtrack.

Oh I already know why: tinnitus! :D

As for an update: I'm reading A Study in Scarlet right now and I'm using Pandora's Baroque channel as accompaniment. It's working out great so far, it really fits the mood!

All music distracts me, even classical. I could never understood how other people at school could get anything done with their tunes blasting on their headphones!

The sound of rain outside is lovely, however.

I like listening to r&b music while I read or anything that happens to be on the radio.

If I am reading something that really interests me I can block out anything. However, I prefer to read in quiet. My music choices would include instrumental music that falls in the background category.

When reading I enjoy having Chopin piano music in the background (although I do throw in some Liszt and Rachmaninoff once in a while). When I'm writing I always put on Gregorian Chants which doesn't make much sense because I'm writing a biography of an operatic tenor of the 20s to the 40s.

I like to have some non-intrusive music to read by also. I generally favour classical music, usually piano sonatas.

Yeah I agree, classical or ambient music is the way to go. No harm in some piano music like ludovico einaudi too though. great question!

Given the choice I prefer silence when I read.

Well, I'm a musician by default. That being said, I listen to a lot of different genres, but in particular traditional Irish music and progressive rock.

Classical or instrumental, possibly Dark Ambient depending on the mood of the moment.
