Teesie, I love how you have captured the natural rhythm and beauty in a certain colloquial style of speech. It's as if your Grandma were just sitting talking to us, but in an alternate universe where everybody is just a little more eloquent and so when they speak it comes out still sounding like themselves, but in poetry. I particularly like how the meter just arises as if on its own out of the words and content.

I am even more impressed after reading your description of the background to your poem. I can imagine you feeling very frustrated after that conversation with your Grandmother, but the poem shows a deep sympathy for her as it expresses her feelings and her voice. (At least I think that's what it's doing? Or are those your feelings?)

Excellent poem! I especially love the use of the word "cain't," as it helps my brain to construct a vivid image of the narrator. I love phonetical dialogue!

I, too, am a Christian, and I understand why you were so discouraged by the conversation with your grandmother. I sincerely hope that things turn around and she is able to at least understand your beliefs, if not come to adopt them for herself. Hoping and praying for the best outcome for you and your family!
