For those of you saying it's not "back," I beg to differ. It's trendy now! It's the same way fashions get recycled through the years. It's actually really easy to get your hands on a turntable these days (mine was less than $50 on Amazon, and they've got loads more in stores like Urban Outfitters), and even artists like Deadmau5 (electro/dubstep) are putting out albums on vinyl.

Plus, are you guys familiar with Record Store Day? Every April, bands release special pressings (like purple records, liquid-filled singles, etc.) to celebrate the survival of local record stores. They aren't exactly drowning in business, but it's a thriving niche market.

So I agree with you, OP. Vinyl records are totally back, and long may they live!

If you have some originals too, you might actually be sitting on some money! Some of the oldies are basically antiques now--an original Abbey Road could fetch a pretty penny. Or you could just show off your collection and be really cool.

Old rock & jazz albums can be worth some money. But I inherited from my father-in-law some old vinyl albums from the 60's & 70's. Show tunes, classical, vocalists, some waltzes & Spanish music. Worth practically nothing. I listed them on Craigslist for months with no interest. (I was asking about $1 per album.) Finally took them to a used book/record store. They gave me $2 for 20-25 albums. Old albums might be a treasure, or might be just trash.

That's definitely true. There isn't a market for everything. Still, records are amazing. I just love that you can hold music in your hands and actually *see* it in the grooves. You just don't get that with mp3s.

I used to have close to 300 records. Some were 78's that went back as far as about 1912. Most of the LP's were from the 60's and 70's but I put the best ones on CD and got rid of the albums because of space issues. Ive still got around 20 left, some were my wifes and some are collectors items. One is a two record set of Benny Goodman live radio performance from 1937-38 that was autographed by Goodman. The records came out in 1952, that was when LP's first went on the market.

Talking about valuable records, Ive got Dave Brubeck's Time Out album. I looked it up and and one in good condition is worth 40 dollars. The one I have is like new, I bought it in a thrift store for 25 cents.

Ah yeah, they do take up a lot of space. My uncle (ex-dj) ended up devoting most of his basement to them! But ooh, sounds like you've got some good ones in there. Good thing you take good care of them!

Thats true.My kids are kind of snobbish, they only like new stuff. They dont go to yard sales or thrift stores. Everything has to be brand new.

Ah that's a shame. I guess it's sort of a hipster trend, so if they're not into that scene, records are just antiques. They're still fun to pass on, I'd think. Passing down music tastes and whatnot

My kids are " snobbish " too, that's why they shop in thrift stores to get real deals in " designer " everything............some of their stuff still have price tags on them...

fortunately WE SHARE THE SAME TASTE IN MUSIC, so they'll have a ball w/whatever I leave them
