Music to write to?

Post by sherlyholmes »

I personally love to write to classical, jazz and Post-Rock music. What types of music do you like to play while writing? Or, do you prefer utter silence?

I personally like listening to classical and dupstep when I'm writing, I find that songs with lyrics can be distracting from writing.

The meditation channel on Pandora. I'm a lot more relaxed and concentrated.

I love listening to songs that are used in video games (Zelda, Bioshock, Dragon Age, etc). It helps remind me (somewhere in the very dark corners of my brain) that video games often change course based on your character's decisions and that helps me resist fighting where my characters are wanting to go towards.

Piano music is some of the most inspirational for me, though anything orchestral of Tchaikovsky's can be a great muse, especially his fourth symphony. I've written some poems with some rock and pop on the brain, but, for the most part, I like something without words and with plenty of emotion. Soundtracks like Howard Shore's score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy or John Williams' music for "Star Wars: Episode 3" are great in that capacity too.
Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who only dream at night.

I love listening to indie folk music. I just set my Pandora station to the Balto station and I get great inspiration.

I get a great artistic flow when writing to instrumentals, particularly acoustic guitar or piano.

I don't tend to listen to music while I'm writing, but I do find songs that inspire scenes/characters for my stories and I'll play tidbits from those songs while I'm writing if I feel stuck. It really depends on the song, but I find a lot of indie rock (Florence and the Machine in particular) or alternative rock works for me.

I listen to Lindsey Stirling when I write. Her upbeat and vibrant music helps me concentrate as well as producing new ideas.

I highly recommend listening to her!

Something with out words...unless it's foreign. Hearing words tends to jar my focus. Sigur Ros is great if it's played softly!

The music I play while writing definitely is dependent on the mood I'm in. When writing from a vulnerable place I love to play songs by the band Explosions in the Sky.

I usually like to listen to a song that matches what I am writing about.
My weekend is all booked!
