What makes a poem great?

Post by readertim109 »

In your opinion, what makes a poem great? What separates a normal poem from the best of the best?

in my opinion....

it doesn't have to have a lot of structure, but something that makes sense.

Something that makes me think.

Words that are put together in a way that I have never heard before, in which explains so much about [whatever].
This is what happens when boredom has taken over.

I tend to like poems that are strong with meaning. I do like structure and form but a i really like a poem that makes me feel something new. In another aspect, I have a hard time saying I dislike a poem (except maybe one that I conceived and abandoned), I usually find something I like about a poem. Saying a poem is better than another is like saying someone is more beautiful than another person. Great poetry is in the eye, mind and ears of the beholder....or reader.

To me a great poem is one that enables me to actually FEEL the pain, sense of loss, great love, feelings of depression or whatever the poem is about. I like a poem that makes me feel, really feel, what the poem is about. Form and structure aren't important to me as long as I feel the poem deep inside.
