Poetry & Music is both different things a Poetry is a form of literary art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its apparent meaning. And Music is an art form in which the medium is sound organized in time. Common elements of music are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.

If it is really going to be a poem about that, you need to think about a special person. It is the idea that counts but rhyme also is one factor that can make it more attrcative.

Hmm...I think it helps to be madly in love with somebody ... or a bitter broken heart...the emotion is what makes a poem about dating good!

Writing poems usually have an idioms which can not be translated literary. Try to use that and also be sure that you are inspired when you are writing. A rhyme can also add beauty on your poems.

Rhyme is not a requirement. Most of the poetry that makes it to the mainstream has gotten into the public eye because of its sing-song. People don't need to understand it to enjoy hearing/reading it. In fact, many people don't try. And some thing poetry is only good if it CAN'T be understood. I disagree.
Poetry is a condensation of emotion. Try this....
Write everything you're thinking until you run out of time, paper or thoughts, whichever comes first. hehe. Then take a break. Come back to what you've written and pick the parts that have the strongest emotional tug on you personally. Pull them out of the paragraphs and look at them as a new piece, arranged in any order you choose. Does it make sense from start to finish? Is anything missing? Is anything repeated unnecessarily?
Keep refining it with this process until every word is there for a reason. If you want it to rhyme, get out a thesaurus and start looking up synonyms. You can typically find some combination that is pleasing to the ear.

A lot of poetry is about evocation and imagery. Often trying to put words together in a new way so that the picture you are trying to paint for the reader stands out.
I think you need the image or the emotion (or best a combination of both) in the forefront of your mind as you write. If you have a central event or theme to build your poem around that is good too.
