Is Rap Poetry?

This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

Re: Is Rap Poetry?

A bit of an inverse answer, but I think more written poets should read their poems out loud prior to publishing to make sure they evoke music and rhythm in the head of the reader! :tiphat:

I definitely think rap is poetry. The artists follow a rhythm that is very similar, along with how they rhyme, and the messages they are trying to convey. So I would say definitely.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize this until you said it! Rap is indeed poetry. Although, I don't think I am a big of this sort of poetry

Yeah. 1000%. Rap is poetry. First of all the words flows in rhythm and that's one obvious attribute of a poem.

As centuries go by, poetry has traversed time through variations in its mode of presentation. Rap in its entirety is not poetry but rather a mode of presentation that could involve poetry. It's what's being presented through rap that is poetry but not rap itself.

Rap could be taken as you want. It could be poetry if you tray to feel the inner message. It could be a meaningless song. The point is you can feel or see poetry everywhere you want or you let your senses feel

It is one of the best kinds of poetry. The right artist will take you on a journey through thier lyrics. It's amazing how vulnerable these people can be. Thier arts are like windows to thier soul

A big part of rap is poetry while poetry is much more than just rap. The rhyme and creativity is almost similar for me.

That would be so amazing. We will have a voice for the words and music.

IMO, rap is a type of singing and songs are basically poems that are sung with music.

Yes, it definitely is. I would not say that there are good or bad poetry/rap singles but rather certain things that some people like and others do not. A lot of people are overly critical of certain rap songs because they most likely are not who it was marketed towards. That can be said about everything, though.

I would say rap is poetry; I see 2 pac (rip), and many of contemporary ones to be rapping poems. And, they don't rap violence only. Actually, there is a whole clique of rap on holy rap (life rap artists). So, yes I would say it is poetry

Yep, rap is poetry for me. Little Simz is a current, great example, and there are others (apologies for the UK perspective here). Some others I like, that blur rap/music/poetry are:

Little Simz
Sleaford Mods
Kate Tempest

Only Little Simz is true rap but is as poetic as the other two, who are on the line of rap. Some lines in rap are amazing, and the manipulation of language, pronunciation, syllables per line et cetera often borders on genius.
