Hi everyone,

I read more poetry in middle school, but it's been a while since I last read poetry seriously and I'm out of the loop. Could anyone suggest some good pieces that I could check out as a newbie to poetry?

If you want to read something fun I'd go with Shel Silverstein. But, if you like horror Edgar Allan Poe is great. Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson are also excellent poets.

I have to second Shel Silverstein. He is one of the few poets I like.

Where the Sidewalk Ends is great. You could start with that one!!

Just start to write. One day you could be a famous poet.

I can't recommend any specific poems, however if you are interested in something to make you think, I would say anything by "transcendentalists" would be a good read. This was a description for certain authors about 100 or so years ago who were often also activists for such causes as Abolishing Slavery, Womens' Suffrage, etc. Many of them write with some deep topics woven into the stories, and are just very interesting in general.
