Ive got an old 78 rpm record by Artie Shaw called Gloomy Sunday. I cant say its the best lyrics, but some of the most unusual for that period. Its about suicide and very depressing. Shaw does a clarinet solo that will blow you away, it would make a person consider suicide. Really weird.

'my name it means nothing, my age it means less, but the place that I come from, is called the midwest'..........yeah Dylan is pretty good; also Beatles of course and for REAL poetry, Leonard Cohen. My favourite.

Yes, I believe he was a schoolteacher, I dont recall his name. He wrote it as a protest to lynchings and wanted Billie to sing it in a club that she was performing in New York.

Yes...it's actually peculiar in that it's very unpleasant to listen to because of the subject matter and description.. but absolutely compelling. I like Nina Simone's version also.
