What songs feature the best lyrics?

Post by Kosmex5 »

Do you have any songs or bands you love for their lyrics?

I think Fleetwood Mac songs have great lyrics (Stevie Nicks is a great writer.) Joy Divisions "Love will tear us apart" is one of my favorites too.

Aerosmith (Dream on and Nobodys fault)
Steve miller band (the joker)
Sublime (What i got and Caress me down)
Robbie williams (angels and let me entertain you and king of the bongo)
Lenny Krevitz (Fly away and black velveteen)
Billy joel (Vienna)

The songs which imo have the greatest lyrics are also my favourite songs, so in no particular order:

Man Who Sold the World - David Bowie
Hallelujah- Rufus Wainwright
Jesus Christ- Brand New
Across the Universe - Fiona Apple

and various songs by My Chemical Romance. Some of their lyrics are really inspirational and moving.
"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."

Groucho Marx
US comedian with Marx Brothers (1890 - 1977)

Death Cab for Cutie have a song, about the death of Ben Gibbard's dad, which are intriguing. It's called Styrofoam Plates:

You're a disgrace to the concept of family
The priest won't divulge that fact in his homily and i'll stand up and scream
If the mourning remain quiet, you can deck out a lie in a suit but i won't buy it.
I won't join in the procession that's speaking their peace, using five dollar words while praising his integrity. and just cause he's gone it doesn't change the fact... he was a bastard in life thus a bastard in death.

Check out this band called The Mountain Goats, he has some really great lyrics, here is a sample from a song called "quetzalcoatl eats plums", simple and beautiful.

i meant to leave the house this morning
and begin making my way toward where you are
i meant to leave the house this morning
i made it halfway across the front yard

but the plum tree hung heavy in my head
and the plum tree hung heavy in my heart
and the plum tree hung heavy over me

so i tore off to the phone
to call you and tell you something, but i couldn't remember what
because through the clean, clean windows
saw the plum tree's leaves, as red as fresh blood

and the plum tree hung heavy in my head
and the plum tree hung heavy in my heart
and the plum tree hung heavy over me

^^I honestly doubt Shakira can make a deeply meaningful song. Well, it can have a certain meaning, but aesthetically it's s**t.

Since this is an english speaking forum, my favourites in english are:

Aesop Rock
Subtle
Slug of Atmosphere
Sage Francis
Sole
Buck 65

That's actually written by The Beatles if we're talking about great lyrics.
