MORE THAN A POEM

[Zoba Ejike]

I was asked why I was the way I am
why I searched for a soul in everything
in things that live and things that do not
my answer "I suffer from an addiction"
I've been enslaved by poetry
my master, a hard taskmaster
drives me every day on a quest
into deep creases of the human mind
I have felt the spirit of poetry
like a living soul, it pulsates within me
I don't know how it found me or why I was chosen
but I take each quest like my last
until the living breath exits my small frame
I will search for the heartbeat in everything
in everything that lives and in everything that does not
and I will bleed their souls onto blank pages
our gift to the world
