Is poetry better with or without background music?

Is poetry better with or without background music? Do you think background music tends to make the poetry better, or do you think it takes attention away from the poetry?

I think that depends on the poem you read , some poems are better understood with classical music as background , especially Mozart and some Strauss waltzes .

I think calm, classical music sometimes goes well with poetry... I like listening to 'the hours' sound track when I'm reading. But really it depends on the person doesn't it! :)

If the poem requires background music then it should have but not that too loud it could be a destruction. May and instrumental one would be better.

Not only does it take away from the poem, it also devalues the music. When I'm listening to Mozart, I listen to Mozart. When I'm reading Keats, I read Keats. Trying to do both at once is like trying to have two girlfriends. You can't devote enough attention to either of them, and you end up disrespecting both of them.

I thing that background music makes mood and readiness for the poem. It's better if poem will be with music.

I think if the music suits well with the poetry, then it can help you appreciate poetry even more

I feel it depends on the poem that's being read, as they're certain poems you would love more and understand more if they were a background music available. It gives a soothing sound!

I think poetry is better without music. Having said that, I like to group poems and songs that evoke particular feelings or concepts together for future convenience; almost like my own multi-artform mixtape.
