Lyrics vs. Background Music

This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

Lyrics vs. Background Music

Post by Kyle22 »

Which do you care more about when listening to music? The lyrics or just the background music? I think I care more about the lyrics, but that is just me.

i relate more to the lyrics than the background music. i can really relate to some of the songs that the band trapt had on their first album.

What I care about more is the lyrics because it can mean something to me or it doesn't.

Obviously all at same time. Infact I can't leave any out. I'd listen to the melody of the music and the lyrics at same time!

There is something about both background music and song with lyrics.
With background music, it can soothe and relax you when things go crazy.
And songs with lyrics can make you feel a connection with the words. It can make you feel seen, that there is someone out there that has the same feelings you do, and they knew how to put it in words.
So both has its place and time to be listened to and appreciated
The world belongs to those who read.

I listen to the lyrics and sing along. But when I’ve got music on while focused on something, then the lyrics fade away. Any music can be background music. I find heavy metal particularly useful for stimulating focus when writing.

Lyrics are my favorite. But at times background music also attracts my mind.

I have to agree with Fliesie01. Both are beautiful and have their time and place. I like to listen to more instrumental music or filmscoring when I'm writing or daydreaming. Then, songs with lyrics when I'm feeling something intensely or having a jam out session. Of course there are times where they overlap and it always depends on what's going on, but that's usually how I listen to it. I like both equally really. :)

When listen to a song I do care more about the lyrics than the background music. I find that the lyrics go along way in creating the appeal of the song regardless of the background music therein.

I care most about the BEAT, followed by the relative motion behind the words and lyrics.

Both. Or lyrics more. Or the melody more. It really depends on my mood, but often I can't separate myself from the entire experience.

When I was younger, I used to focus more on the lyrics. To be honest, because of my focus on the lyrics, I had an incomplete understanding of what makes a song great -- I noticed beautiful lyrics and a pleasing melody and perhaps a driving beat, but not much more. Later, when I wanted background music to help me focus on writing, I deliberately chose music without lyrics, and I soon began to appreciate many more layers of musical complexity -- I can hear all the instruments now and feel a much richer connection to the music I listen to.

It's always the lyrics that make a certain music a song. I wanna feel every word the artists have put forward into their masterpiece.

I listen to both. I think lyrics and bgms go hand in hand. When I am listening to a song I do want a good bgm complementing the lyrics, that's what makes a song complete at least for me.
